Books

On my way home from work yesterday I realized why I don't read anymore. I don't pick fun, captivating books. Heres a little back ground on why. I think I have a phobia of wasting time. It drives Charles crazy. I can't sit and talk to him, I have to be folding laundry, doing dishes or some other task while we talk. I don't watch TV or do anything relaxing during the day. I am always thinking of things that need to be done. So, when I read I want that time to be productive too. So, I choose books that will improve an area of my life or give me some applicable knowledge for my career, church etc. For instance, the last book I read was Money Mastery. Don't get me wrong, it was a really good book and gave me ideas on how to manage our money better. But, it wasn't one of those books I was just dying to read if I had a spare second. I kind of read it out of duty. Charles is always telling me to take time to relax, so I think I want to get back into reading. Do any of you have some suggestions? I'm not a fantasy fan and I don't want anything depressing or scary. Hold off on the crazy long books too, sorry ladies, no Gone With the Wind for me!

Heather, you should join Good Reads. Then you can see what your friends are reading and read reviews and stuff.

I know you say you don't like fantasy, but you should read Elantris by Brandon Sanderson. (Or Mistborn, The final empire). I thought I didn't like fantasy, but I LOVE his books. His books are REALLY easy to read and super interesting. It's definately an etertaining read, but he deals with issues like religion and social class. He also always has a very strong female character (Bart's convinced this is the only reason I really like these books). ;o)

IF you're looking for a cute little book though, "Ella Minnow Pea" was a cute one that was simple and easy to read. It's not going to win any awards, but it made me smile.

Dracula's awesome too. ;o)

Oh, and Pride and Prejudice...pretty much my favorite book of all time...but if you get it, get the annotated version. It helps you understand the book a lot better. I'd let you borrow my copy, but my mom has it. :o)

i think you should join Good Reads too. i'm on there. :)

then you can see what your friends have read and what they rated it (it is better to get recommendations from someone you know and trust their judgment and standards), what they are currently reading, and what they want to read.

you HAVE to give fantasty another try. seriously. especially if relaxation is your goal. i would say i'm not a fantasy fan myself, but then i look at some of my favorite recent reads and realize how much i enjoy a good fantasy story. it is nice to be able to escape to another place. :)

Fiction must reads:

Les Miserables (the abridged version of course, this book as so many spiritual insights)

anything Jane Austen

The Bayern books by Shannon Hale (i have them all if you want to borrow them)

The Hunger Games books

Fablehaven series

Inkheart series

The DaVinci Code (you learn a lot about religious history, but some stuff is not correct so it is helpful to have someone to ask questions)

The Peacegiver (life changing perspective on the Atonement and our Savior)

Non-fiction

Tuesdays with Morrie

Eve and the Decision in Eden

The Countinuous Atonement (currently reading)

anyway, that's enough for now. these and many more are all on my good reads page. :)

Okay, I love reading because it helps me escape from my own problems in life. I like to tell Mark it is like watching a really good movie, only better.
It is interesting to hear other people's recomendations. I love Pride and Prejudice, my all time favorite as well (I love Jane Austen). I also love anything Stephenie Meyer (Twilight) wrights. I liked her books before they became so huge. Her books are definately books you will want to read in a day and ignore you child and husband for. I also really liked The Hunger Games. Mark doesn't like to read novels and I made him read The Hunger Games and he really liked them, so maybe you could start with that one! Good luck! I hope you get hooked.

Since you don't want anything Fantasy or somewhat sad, I can't really help you out... haha I do recommend Sarah's Key by Tatiana De Rosnay. It's about the Holocaust so it's a little sad, but it had a pretty good ending!

Hey, it's Jaicee. I have the exact same phobia that you do! It drives Jordan crazy because he never knows if I'm listening to him, because I'm walking around picking up toys, or doing dishes, or yelling at the girls or something. :)

And I don't read much, either... but I do have one recommendation that I think you'd love, if you haven't already read them. Jordan and I read together The Great and Terrible series by Chris Stewart. I didn't feel bad about reading those because they gave incredible gospel insights while being extremely entertaining.

We miss you guys!

Hey Heather!! You may or may not remember me...I think you should though it's Amanda from Moab! :) Anyway I wanted to suggest "The Secret Life of Bees" By Sue Monk Kidd. It's my favorite book of all time and it isn't super long so I think you would enjoy it...maybe not though hahah I never know. I am also a member of good reads and I love it. I also loved "the Lovely Bones" but it's really sad...but good...:)
